The Vasque Ion is a high-performance approach shoe that's perfectly suited to 5.2 scrambling, use as a light trail hiker, and everyday urban missions. Starting from the bottom up, the Ion features the famous Stealth sticky rubber found in Five Ten's climbing shoes. THE highest friction rubber available, Stealth's unique compounds allow you to grip the trail or rock like no other material, while providing maximum shock absorption on the go. Integrated components throughout the midsole provide incredible support: a nylon shank provides both flex and stiffness, and a tri-density compression molded EVA midsole is softer under the forefoot, stiffest on the outside of the heel to prevent pronation, and supportive under the heel for optimal durability. A high-quality contoured EVA footbed provides a supportive arch and heel cup that frankly blows other stock footbeds out of the water. The Ion's upper combines highly breathable nylon mesh with sturdy Nubuck and Split leather, while lacing that extends to the toe provides a precise climbing-shoe style fit. A medium forefoot fit accommodates foot swelling during exercise, while a tight heel provides maximum performance.

Vasque Ion/Catalyst
Vasque has hit the mark with the Women's Ion/ Men's Catalyst. Essentially the same shoe, both of these rugged companions really do the job! I trail run in the desert each winter in loose rocky terrain, run on rocks large and small, and charge through thick brush. These shoes never let me down, and never fall apart. They stick like glue to steep rock surfaces, and when I'm done adventuring, I slow to a walk and just keep on going in soft comfort. These really are great shoes. I keep an extra pair looking nice so I can wear them in public, and still be ready for anything. I got the Ions for my wife because she tends to slip on rocks, but no more. The ‘Stealth’ rubber works! They may not have the perky look of some, but they completely deliver in every other way.

The best shoe
These shoes have taken me 500 plus miles. I have ordered two extra pairs. They support the whole foot, cradle ones arch, and prevent sliding forward and jamming ones toe. They hold their shape, they look good. Mostly they hold the road; meaning they grip, have traction, don't slip or skid as well as not causing lurching or grabbing. I have hiked for 23 years like a maniac, and these are far and away the best shoes I've ever worn. Happy trails.


Vasque Ion - Who could ask for anything more!
I shopped and shopped to find the "right" shoe for me. I underpronate (walk on the outside edge of my foot) and wear orthotics - these shoes are fantastic. I imagine they are fantastic even if you don't underpronate. I hike on uneven ground, streets, over rocks and have never had a shoe perform so well. They grip when needed and flex in all the right places - right out of the box. Buy 'em, you'll love 'em!
