Patagonia Rubicon Jacket - Men's
its bomb proof
i have had many performance jackets in my day and this one is the cream of the crop. just came back from winter park co. and really put it to test. it easily kept me comfortable on the mountain but it was when i was cross country skiing in the backcountry that i really pushed it. had sixty mile an hour winds that closed all the roads, so we set off on skis from our back door. it was an epic day and nothing came through the material.
good looking, tough, and waterproof, but...
I get compliments on this jacket - it has an interesting denim look to the fabric. In typical Patagonia fashion, it is well built. The construction is outstanding, most of the features work well, and the waterproofness, windproofness and durability of the material is great. I would not use this jacket for long backcountry tours. It is a bit heavy and bulky - I have lighter shells I would use for that. But, for a quick lap or bootpack to that peak just out of bounds it would be fine. Two negatives: 1. Those two zippers across the chest that look like pockets are actually ventilation – pitzips would work better for keeping the weather out. If I wanted to ventilate my chest, I would just zip down the jacket(!) These zips are redundant and unnecessary. 2. The removable hood would be a nice feature if it weren’t so difficult to snap in place in the front collar. You have to take your gloves off to get your fingers in this small fold of fabric. Pain. I just leave my hood always attached.
Good in Mountain and the City!
The jacket is perfect somebody looking to satisfy both the mountain and city use. Completely satisfying the what you need at the mountain for skiing/riding for days but also quite handy in the city on the rainy/snow days without looking too "OUTDOORSY". Super versatile.
