A good starter backpack
After a thorough search I settled on the Tioga for my 9 year old daughter. It had the best combination of volume, low weight, and range of adjustment for height. Other packs are ridiculously heavy especially the internal frame packs. It makes no sense to devote four and a half pounds of a kid’s load to an empty pack. The Tioga was clearly the best in this regard. My daughter used it on her first overnight trip and liked it a lot. She thinks the pack is cool and she had no complaints about any discomfort over two days. She is 48” tall and the shortest end of the range of adjustment was just right for her. The frame telescopes between the waist belt and shoulder straps to adjust for height which is a better method than moving the straps higher or lower on the pack. The straps also adjust side to side. Appears to be reasonably well made.
My backpack is awesome
I am 9 and I got this pack to use at camp. It holds a lot of stuff and is easy to carry - just enough pockets and looks cool!
Ho hum
I order the Tioga Junior for my 8-year old daughter's first trip. The pack arrived quickly enough, I liked the service and ease of ordering. The pack is of so-so quality and kind of boring, with few interesting features to improve its basic functionality or appeal to its presumably younger target user. It handled the 10 +/- pounds I loaded for her first trip just fine. She didn't have any pain or problems until towards the end of the 3-day, 13-mile round trip.
